Dear Editor,
Since sworn in as president of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana three years ago, President Mohammed Irfaan Ali has been trying to bring the two major races-East Indians and blacks together so that everyone could live in peace and harmony and respect one another.
His ‘One Guyana’ plan which is not a new concept and did not originate from him or the PPP speaks of his efforts to maintain peace and stability in the country. However, the honcho and de facto president who is in his fifth term as president is not only stifling his efforts but is undermining his progress. We are therefore calling on our duly elected president to take control of his presidency and the country from the honcho and de facto president and govern it as if he is the real and not a mickey mouse president. If Ali does not assert himself as the real president but allow the honcho and de facto president to be his boss, then he will suffer the same consequences as President Ramotar in 2011 with a minority government and then losing his presidency in 2015.
There is no question that Ramotar allowed the honcho and de facto president to cast him aside and it seems that President Ali is making the same mistake. The truth is both Ramotar and Ali were handpicked by Jagdeo to be the PPP presidential candidates because he knew he could control them. He did not want Anil Nandlall to be the PPP presidential candidate because he knew that he could not dominate Nandlall who unlike Ramotar and Ali is a very strong character. Several senior members of the party knew that Nandlall would not have allowed the honcho and de facto president to dominate his presidency like what he did to Ramotar and is now doing to President Ali. Both are very weak and have poor management and governance skills.
The honcho and de facto president has taken over the leadership of the country and the government from President Ali. His dominance can be felt everywhere including the holding of weekly press conferences in the guise of the General Secretary of the PPP and he continues to dictate government policies without much input from President Ali, PM Phillips, and the cabinet. PM Phillips is the first Vice President on paper or in theory only. He is not allowed to formulate any policies but must do what is told to him by the honcho and de facto president.
It is known that most ministers and even the Prime Minister are fearful to attend Cabinet meetings, because they have been constantly berated and told what to do by the honcho and de facto president. As a result, many felt that Guyana has emerged into a dictatorship like Putin’s Russia, Castro’s Cuba, Xi Jinping’s China, and Hitler’s Germany, among many others. Many in the public are of the opinion that the first three years of Ali’s government is worse than the previous 23 years of PPP rule because of the vindictive and spiteful actions of the honcho and de facto who has marginalized Blacks across the country. As a case in point, in the last three years, 98 percent of all government contracts have been awarded to relatives, friends, and supporters of the PPP, mostly East Indians and only two percent to blacks. This is true of the PPP government use of the taxpayers’ money to offer cash grants and the sharing of chickens to mostly PPP supporters and not to the other races. The modus operandi of the honcho and de facto president is to victimize and marginalize the other major group because they are not supporters of the PPP.
The public should know that during the tenure of the honcho and de facto president, Guyana’s GDP slipped from 7.3 percent to less than 3 percent, CLICO collapsed, and NIS became bankrupt. The PPP government spent US$230M of the taxpayer’s money to build the white elephant Skeldon sugar factory, which has never produced a pound of sugar. Not to mention the blatant misuse of public funds to build Berbice Bridge and the Marriott Hotel. Finally, we are urging all Guyanese to take another look at the SU’s interview with Vice News reporter Isobel Yeung, which is very shameful, distasteful and for him to use an honorary Doctorate in front of his name is dishonest because he did not study for it and he is the only person I know who is doing so.
Regards,
Aubrey Reteymer
