Kaieteur Sports – Since its formation in September 1990 by three times Commonwealth Youth Service Awardee, the ST. Francis Community Development, the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club MS has produced a combined one hundred and twenty players for Berbice, Guyana and the West Indians at all levels. Additionally, the RHTYSC has also produced two international players for the United States of America.
Among the players produced by the club are Test player Assad Fudadin, Royston Crandon, Esuan Crandon, Dominie Rikhi, Kevin Sinclair, Junior Sinclair, Kelvon Anderson, Shemaine Campbelle, Erva Giddings, Sheneta Grimmond, Shakabi Gajnabi, Dilbert Hicks, Abdel Fudadin, Shanon Grant and Renwick Batson.
The club currently has six players participating in the 2023 Caribbean Premier League- the most by any cricket club in Guyana. The club, which is headed by Berbice Cricket Board President Hilbert Foster, has Kevin Sinclair, Junior Sinclair, Kelvon Anderson, Shemaine Campbelle, Sheneta Grimmond and Shakabi Gajnabi in the league playing for the Amazon Warriors. The club’s production machine continues to produce quality players with off spinner Jonathan Rampersaud and Matthew Pottaya emerging as the top wicket takers for the Guyana Under19 and Under17 teams in the 2023 Cricket West Indies tournament.
Rampersaud, who is also the Asst. Secretary of the RHTYSC and Public Relation officer of the Berbice Cricket Board, was born on the 6th of November, 2003 and attended the J.C. Chandisingh Secondary School where he obtained 12 subjects at the CSEC level. He joined the RHTYSC in 2013 at the young age of 10. He made his national debut at the under15 level in 2018 where he took eight wickets and scored 118 runs. He was named in a West Indies Under15 training squad in 2018 and played the Guyana Cricket Board franchise Cricket tournament for Upper Corentyne at the age of 14 years.
Rampersaud also played for the Select 11 in the GCB senior county where he was not only good with the ball but also scored a fifty versus Demerara.
In this year CWI under19 tournament, he claimed a combined 25 wickets and had two five wicket hauls – 5 for 16 vs Leewards Island and 5 for 18 vs Trinidad. Last year he took 15 wickets including 6 for 36 vs Trinidad. Rampersaud is currently a senior member of the Rose Hall Town Namilco Thunderbolt flour first division team.
Matthew Pottaya was born on the fourth of March 2006 to Tyrone and Bhompattie Pottaya. He attended the Albion Primary school then the Port Mourant Secondary where he recently sat at the CSEC level. He joined the RHTYSC, MS in 2014 when he was just 8 years old and immediately caught the eyes of the coaches. He was the prestigious cricketer of the academy in the same year and played for Guyana at the Under 15 level in 2019 but COVID 19 stop him from participating in 2020. A broken figure on his right hand ruled him out of 2022 CWI under17 tournament.
Pottaya described this setback as a major disappointment as his confidence was high with some good performance in the GCB inter county tournament.
Pottaya, whose father is a senior executive of the RHTYSC, continued to focus on improving his game and emerged as the joint wicket taker in the CWI two days tournament with sixteen wickets in three drawn matches for Guyana. His best performance was 6 for 55 versus the eventually champions Barbados. He is currently the captain of the RHTYSC Bakewell Under17 team and also plays for the RHT Pepsi Under19 team, RHT Namilco Thunderbolt Flour Under23 and first division teams. He also captained the Berbice Under15 and Under17 teams and his main objective now is to play at the regional under19 level. Pottaya hopes to play the game at the profession level intends to make his name for Guyana at the Under19 level.
Both Pottaya and Rampersaud expressed thanks to the Management of the RHTYSC especially Club Secretary Hilbert Foster for his guidance over the years.
Membership to the club is not only free but the RHTYSC also provided all equipment for its members. The two promising players also extended thanks to Mr. Bert Sukhai of Namilco and Rajin Ganga for their investment into their cricket career and started that they are hoping to obtain cricketing contracts with the Guyana Cricket Board in the near future.
