Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – Slavery has been abolished. Our ancestors would have suffered and fought for their freedom. I feel for my people, but I also looked at videos circulating of the Gladstones’ family entering our beloved Guyana and they are met with disappointed and hurt people asking for an apology and for compensation.
My eyes are filled with tears because I am torn to take a side, but I will express my opinion and offer some advice.
My fellow Guyanese, these faces that met yours were not the ones that started slavery. Their ancestors were.
It would be tremendously spiteful of us to demand from these folks, compensation and demand, an apology.
If it is that they would like to apologise on behalf of their ancestors, that is entirely up to the family.
However, an apology by definition is a regretful acknowledgement of an offence.
These people are apologising for what? History?
Let us not let our past define us. We are a forgiving nation and our people are not subjected to what had hurt us, we have grown from then. We have created a history of our own abolishing slavery.
Let us not reminisce and make the descendants who did not commit the crime, pay for it.
Guyana I know our heart hurts for our ancestors and what they would have went through. But let me ask you this dear reader, if you committed a crime, is it right to punish your child for your wrongs?
Is it forgivable for your child to endure the punishment because or you?
Nothing can compensate for the loss of lives and for the barbaric treatment endured by our ancestors. If you look around, we are far from this. We are a free country. No more slavery. No more.
Let us not judge too quickly. We are a wise country, we should be careful with our judgments.
My Guyana, I love you dearly but let us be reminded by the wise words of Mahatma Ghandi that, “An eye for an eye will only make the world blind.”
“The time is always right to do the right thing,” -Martin Luther King Junior
Sincerely,
Saaya Prasad
