Waterfalls Magazine – Guyanese icon, Eddy Grant will on September 9, 2023 receive a plaque on the well known ‘Music Walk of Fame’ in Camden Town, London. Grant celebrated his 75th birth anniversary this year.
The singer/ songwriter began pioneering multi-racial British group; the Equals in the 1960s before finding solo success with hits like “Electric Avenue” which is a response to the 1981 Brixton riots. The song solidified him as a vital black British voice of that era.
Grant is also credited for helping to secure the release of famed South African President Nelson Mandela with his influential hit “Give Me Hope Joanna”.
According to an article published by Beat Magazine UK, the Camden Musical Festival is the brainchild of local music promoter Lee Bennett. Bennett is hoping to make it the start of an annual music event celebrating a range of musical genres.
To mark this year’s plaque unveilings, a planned free music festival will take place. Performers on the day will include Billy Bragg, The Buzzcocks, Shalamar, Rusty Egan (Blitz Music Machine) and Jazzie B (founder of Soul II Soul).
The live event will also be broadcast on American TV network ABC. A week-long of unveilings will also take place from September 4 – 9 2023, with the full list of inductees as follows: September 4: Janis Joplin, Harvey Goldsmith and UB40; September 5: Gordon Mac (founder of Kiss FM) and DJ Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson; September 6: The Sugarhill Gang, September 7: Eddy Grant; September 8: Kinks and the Buzzcocks; and September 9: Billy Bragg and Shalamar.
According to the Beat UK, Camden Town has always been known for its free thinking and musical roots. Celebrating Camden’s influence in music cannot be overstated.
The article pointed out: “All the big names have played here sometime in their life and many, like Amy Winehouse, grew up on these very streets…Grant who grew up on the streets of Camden. Grant said he is looking forward to going back to his roots that he once called home.”
According to their website, The Music ‘Walk of Fame’ is easy to locate. Just head down to 178 Camden High Street and keep your eyes on the road. There, you will find a striking memorial to some of the most original, vibrant, and influential musical artists to ever live.
Amongst the plaques, you’ll find David Bowie and, Amy Winehouse, who was a local Camden resident up to the time of her death.
