Dear Editor,
One cannot be amused watching Min. Edghill as he parades to various areas with selected media personnel to inspect works undertaken by contractors. It’s interesting to see how he upbraids the contractors and issues threats to the contractors, but ironically, most are mediocre/small contractors, which I’m sure got contracts based on loyalty to the party. The big contractors seem to be excluded from the comic show.
In Guyana, even if a contractor is blacklisted from bidding for future contracts, he could register another firm in his family/relative’s name and still bid. Chances are that is presently happening. Presently, the Minister’s main concern is getting contracts to be finished in the time frame estimated or before. Quality of work doesn’t seem to be an issue.
Editor, a few days ago, Pres. Ali visited selected parts of the Uitvlugt/Stewartville communities, whilst it was a welcome visit, most are still unclear about the purpose of his visit. The visit was arranged a while before, so a few roads and streets were quickly polished up in anticipation of his visit. I was in amazement as he and his battalion of PR officials videoed the community as they passed through but failed to stop in certain sections to listen to the resident’s concerns. Whilst the crowd that goes with him is more than the turnout by residents of the communities, no doubt the ‘spin doctors’ will manufacture glorious stories to paint different stories. What everyone fails to notice is that approximately two weeks after the roads/streets are completed, there were visible signs of deterioration, with edges not properly smoothed, making the likes of a pond/pool, which will contribute further to the deterioration of the roads.
Finally, Editor, one has to wonder why the minister is not going after those who are approving the works completed and they are not lasting the estimated time. Engineers are supposed to be inspecting and testing all works carried out by contractors and if not to standard, corrective measures should be taken, before approval for payment. If anyone has doubts that skullduggery not happening, just look at the quality of work being done and the cost. Almost everyone hears of contractors having to pay huge sums of money to get contracts and for it to pass, but is anyone addressing that? In Hague back dam, the road is slated to be rebuilt, some morons approve the road to be built before others and instead of starting from the back and coming forward, they did the reverse. Without a doubt, traversing on a good road to repair the bad one will cause the good one to be damaged. Majority of the country is under the impression that benefits of the oil will meet them, but when?
Sadly, no one knows.
Sincerely,
Sahadeo Bates
