Dear Editor,
On Saturday last, my mother’s health deteriorated, and as a result, we rushed her to Woodland’s Hospital at the Emergency ward. We reached at around 12:30 pm and at that point in time, she was placed on a monitor where her heart rate and her blood pressure were on display.
I discovered her pressure remained extremely high, hence I pointed out to the doctor in charge that it’s a cause of concern since it could have been the result of something much worse. He responded that they are monitoring it.
We rushed now to complete a head scan but the doctor expected to read the report would only be available at 2pm the said day, but that doctor showed up at 2:40pm. By that time, the emergency ward doctor would have been on lunch. Again, we waited while systems weren’t in place to have my mother’s pressure under control. The doctor finally showed up and I had to place the results of the head scan before him since he didn’t rush to his patient; instead, he was chatting with his nurse. He read the report and advised me to admit her. For the duration of her stay, I didn’t see the urgency of the nurse or doctor to have her out of danger instead the doctor’s main focus was for me to admit her.
I was skeptical to admit her because I was unable to secure a private room so one of us (her children) would remain with her. They were giving us a semi private room, with her being unable to do much for herself and not giving me the option to remain with her. I discussed this with my family members and we weren’t able to decide what to do. At around 4:40pm, we were given refusal to admittance papers, still being hesitant about whether we should admit her or not, so we were practically thrown out of the emergency ward because we perhaps indirectly indicated we wouldn’t like our mom to be admitted.
The doctor maintained that he wouldn’t give her any medications because at first, we decided we wouldn’t like to admit her in a shared room. With us receiving the transfer papers, my brother spoke up and then finally we did obtain some medications but to our surprise, they were medications that should treat infants and kids. My mom got the lowest milligrams of the tablets to combat her near death condition.
That day because of the poor treatment and uncompassionate behaviour of the staff, my mom could have lost her life. I am extremely disappointed at the staff and more so the management of one of the most established private hospital in Guyana. It is mind boggling and despicable how frontline workers show no remorse for their patients who are extremely critical and are slothful in administering the appropriate treatment even when in the emergency ward. I am not fully comprehending how an hour’s lunch is necessary for an emergency ward doctor when his patient could lose his/her life in a split second.
Thank God my mom’s alive but I wouldn’t wish for another to experience what we endured.
Yours faithfully,
Neelam Ramcharitar
