Kaieteur Sports – Another century from opening batsman Adrian Sukhwa was enough to inspire Riverside Cricket Club to an efficient five-wicket victory over Concord Eagles in the final of the 2023 Connecticut Cricket League 40-overs competition.
The right-handed Sukhwa slammed 101 to help Riverside Cricket Club safely reach 187-5 with a whopping 52 balls remaining. Concord Eagles had earlier tallied up an inadequate 182 all out in the 40 overs. Riverside Cricket Club won the toss.
In semi-final at the same Keney Park venue, Sukhwa slammed 144 the previous Sunday.
On this occasion, the Berbician, a former Guyana youth cricketer, batted with similar aggression hammering six sixes and seven fours from 66 balls.
He also shared an enterprising, 109-run opening stand with ex-Guyana and West Indies player Narsingh Deonarine.
The left-handed Deonarine stroked 43, an innings contained three fours and a six.
Ashish Massey and Vaibhav Sharma ended with 2-23 and 2-28 respectively for Concord Eagles.
When they (Concord Eagles) batted, right-handed middle-order batsman Lahiru Perera top-scored with 77 which spanned 76 deliveries. He tucked away three sixes and four fours while Venkat Rao contributed 40 and 21 from Shoaib Shaikh.
Seamer Ashish Eppa grabbed three wickets for 33 off his maximum eight overs for the winning combination on a pitch that offered variable bounces. Skipper Bruce Blackwood, the brother of West Indies player Jermaine Blackwood, supported Eppa with 2-23 in his eight overs as well. Sukhwa was named player-of-the-match for his outstanding batting performance, and he received cash incentives. The winning and runners-up teams were also awarded with trophies.
Meanwhile, the 24-year-old Sukhwa expressed elation with his batting display and was indeed delighted to make a big contribution for the team.
Quizzed on how he approached the innings, Sukhwa responded: “Just went out there and be positive and I was confident our team coming out victorious.”
Sukhwa continued to ply his trade in North America and glad that he is getting to opportunity to play competitive cricket. He mentioned that he is very ambitious of representing Guyana at the senior level and will continue to work hard on his game. “That [is] my priority now to be back in the Guyana Cricket Board’s setup and represent the country in both the four-day and limited formats,” Sukhwa commented.
