Kaieteur Sports – A scintillating display of shrewd word-forming skills, coupled with strong mental fortitude, earned veteran scrabble player, Moen Gafoor, top honours when scrabble players convened last Saturday afternoon, at Teacher Kampta Ramnarine’s residence, Enterprise, East Coast Demerara, to compete in a tournament in honour of a recently deceased player, Carlton Murray.
Moen Gafoor (2nd R) shows off his wares in the company of the other podium finishers L-R Krakowsky, Jacobs and Liverpool.
The 5 rounds affair saw Gafoor notching up a perfect 5 points and a healthy positive spread of 764, while Winslow Jacobs continued to display a fine vein of form and finished with 4 points and a positive spread of 341 to earn the 2nd place slot. Curtis Liverpool also demonstrated some measure of consistency, also notching up 4 points but with a negative spread of 171. Another veteran player, James Krakowsky, closed off the podium spots after amassing 3 points and a positive spread of 188.
Gafoor’s victims were Marshal Karamchand (343), Kampta Ramnarine (123), Winslow Jacobs (36), James Krakowsky (115) and Robert Williams (112).
Meanwhile, the players conducted the competition in memory of their recently departed colleague, Carlton Murray, and moments before activities got underway, observed a minute’s silence. The affiliates are also working ardently to have the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) back on stream with a competent executive committee in place.
