…Austin, Harvey and Roberts left out
By Rawle Toney
Kaieteur Sports – Tianna Springer will be the lone Guyanese in action in today’s 200 metres, after squeezing into the finals at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.
The other athletes on show, Malachi Austin, Javon Roberts, Attoya Harvey and Narrisa McPherson, though turning in impressive and personal best times, didn’t advance.
Springer, who won the games’ women’s 400m title, returned to clock 24.39s second in her semi-final run which placed her fifth in the race.
However, her time was among the two fastest of the non-automatic qualifiers, providing her with a lifeline and an opportunity to contend for another medal at the seventh edition of the championships.
Meanwhile, although Malachi Austin had already secured a bronze medal in the 400m, his time of 21.99 seconds in the 200m was insufficient to qualify for the finals.
Nevertheless, this marked another personal best for the 16-year-old athlete. He had entered the event with a personal best time of 22.33 seconds, achieved at this year’s CARIFTA Games.
He further improved his time to 22.27 seconds during the opening round of the 200m at the Hasley Crawford Stadium.
Meanwhile, McPherson didn’t make it out of the women’s 800m qualification round, with her time of two minutes, 19.76s good enough to finish eighth in the second semi-finals.
McPherson will not return to Guyana empty-handed, having already secured a bronze medal in the women’s 400m final.
Even though achieving a person-best time of 1:55.69 in the Men’s 800m, Javon Roberts placed fifth in the qualifying rounds.
His previous best time in the 800m, 1:56.64, came at the CARIFTA Games this year, where he won gold.
Roberts also competed in the Men’s 1500m event where he also didn’t qualify out of the strong pool.
Attoya Harvey also missed out on a place in the final, with her 2:17.47 saw her finishing outside of the qualifying bracket.
All eyes will be on Springer today as she hunts for another medal. Guyana will also compete in the Mixed 4x400m relay.
