Kaieteur Sports – A jubilant gathering of over 50 young cricketers between the ages of eight to 17, convened on Monday to mark the commencement of the Albion Community Centre Cricket Club’s Cricket Academy. Embarking on its 21st iteration, this extensive six-day event, culminating on Saturday (August 12), is primed to furnish students with a comprehensive grasp of cricket’s nuances.
The curriculum encompasses an array of subjects, ranging from the game’s rules and decorum, substance abuse/misuse, cricket etiquette, health and safety, mental outlook, the underlining the role of education, and the importance of physical fitness and well-being.
Running from 08:30 AM to 3:00 PM daily, the schedule features morning sessions hosted at the Albion Community Centre Cricket Club, while afternoon sessions unfold at the Jai Hind Ground. Participants will be under the guidance of former West Indies opening batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon who serves as head of the coaching team. Apart from Chattergoon, are two other prominent Albion and West Indies cricketing figures, Devendra Bishoo and Veerasammy Permaul also assisting with the coaching of these youngsters over the next couple days. Joining the ranks is the seasoned Fabian Naiken, who has traveled from Canada to contribute his experience to the coaching ensemble.
Overseeing the Academy is the club’s Acting Secretary, Prem Kanhai, who holds the position of Chief Coordinator. A supportive team complements his efforts, comprising Simon Naidu, the club’s Administrative Officer, Treasurer Orvin Mangru, and Dhanraj Arjune, the Community Development Officer of Albion Estate.
Notably, the driving force behind this year’s Academy is Nizul Hussain, a Connecticut-based entrepreneur, who has represented the Club across various levels as a dynamic opening batsman before relocating to the United States of America, reaffirmed his unwavering commitment for the second consecutive year by contributing over G$300,000 to the cause.
