Kaieteur News – The Ministry of Housing and Water will soon construct another highway between Diamond and Craig, East Bank Demerara (EBD) at an estimated cost of $10,162,913,655.
During the recent opening of tenders at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office, it was revealed that Chinese contractor – China Railway First Group Co Limited is among the 14 contractors that bid for the contract.
According to the ministry, the description of the project is for the construction of a main bypass Highway and Connectors from Great Diamond to Craig. This project is divided into five lots.
At the opening of tenders, it was disclosed that works at Lot 1 of the project is estimated to cost $2,757,551,283, Lot 2 is estimated to cost $2,575,190,223, Lot 3 is estimated to cost $1,964,339,423, Lot 4 $1,432,916,363, and Lot 5 $1,432,916,363.
The ministry had explained that the new highway, upon completion will connect the Eccles to Diamond four-lane highway to Craig and provide an alternative route for commuters heading in and out of the city of Georgetown.
Back in December 2021, this publication had reported that the Ministry had signed a $13.3 billion project with 12 contractors to build a new four-lane road from Eccles to Diamond. That new four-lane project has been divided into 12 Lots and will measure some 9.4km of concrete road. The Eccles to Diamond four-lane road is said to be a continuation of the Mandela to Eccles four-lane road that has already been constructed.
In February, it was also reported that the Ministry had signed another contract to the tune of $3.43 billion for the construction of a new highway from Eccles to Diamond (Old and New Diamond Schemes).
