Kaieteur News – A New Amsterdam man was on Saturday allegedly beaten by two persons, after he took away their firearm and ran, fearing for his life.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GDF) between 03:20 hrs and 03:45 hrs, Police ranks acting on information received went to J’s Supermarket at Essex Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice, where one a .38 Revolver and one live .38 ammunition were found.
According to a 29-year-old Security Guard who was on duty attached to the Supermarket, he saw one Oswain Lawson called ‘Blacka’ running towards the supermarket with one identifiable male and one identifiable female chasing him.
The guard stated that he saw Lawson throw what appeared to be a firearm into the supermarket compound. This happened just before the suspects who were chasing Lawson attacked him through the street, dealing him several lashes about his body with a piece of wood, while enquiring about the firearm.
Lawson however managed to run away and went to J’s Supermarket, where the suspected .38 Revolver and one .38ammunition were seen.
Police ranks upon arrival reportedly took the firearm and ammunition to the Central Police Station, where Lawson was seen reporting the incident.
Lawson claimed that he and an identifiable individual had a misunderstanding that led to a scuffle between them. An identifiable female who was there with the said male, pulled a firearm out of her waist, and as a result, Oswain dealt her one lash with a bottle to the right hand causing the firearm to fall to the ground.
The victim said he picked up the firearm and ran through Essex Street, with the suspects chasing him with pieces of wood in their hands. He claimed that as he ran through Essex Street, he threw the firearm into the supermarket compound. The man and woman however caught up with Lawson and dealt him several lashes about his body before he managed to escape.
Marks of violence were said to be seen on Lawson body, and Police escorted him to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for medical attention. He is presently in Police custody, assisting with the investigation.
The suspected firearm and ammunition were marked, sealed and lodged in his presence at the Central Police Station. Efforts by the Police so far to locate the identifiable man and woman have so far proven futile.
