Kaieteur News – The Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA) has unveiled plans to establish industrial parks across Guyana, with the aim of providing enhanced support to agro-processors in the country. This announcement was delivered by Ramsay Ali, the President of the Association, during its annual mid-year dinner and launch of the 60th Anniversary activities at the Princess Hotel on Thursday.
Ali emphasized the Association’s intention to collaborate with the government to initiate these facilities, starting with at least one industrial park. He highlighted the pressing need for space among agro-processors nationwide and expressed optimism about addressing this issue.
Notably, GMSA has a significant stake in agro-processing, boasting around 350 agro-processors as part of its membership. Ali underscored the Association’s history of investing in agro-processors, particularly through the successful annual Uncapped Marketplace event, which has facilitated the growth of numerous small businesses over time.
The President distinguished the industrial park concept from the agro-processing facilities established by the Ministry of Agriculture, clarifying that the parks will be more comprehensively equipped to handle advanced manufacturing needs. “I know the Ministry of Agriculture is doing what they call agro-processing facilities across the country but I’m not talking about that. This is something else I’m talking about. These are the agro-processors that already have their own equipment and need space– better space to manage their businesses better,” he emphasised.
Ramsay accentuated the importance of better spaces for agro-processors with existing equipment, who have evolved from starting their businesses in modest environments like their home kitchens, bedrooms and garages.
Ali also shed light on the exorbitant cost of land in the country, which poses a significant challenge for many agro-processors aspiring to have their own facilities. Consequently, the GMSA envisions each industrial park accommodating 20-30 agro-processors, featuring necessary amenities such as energy and water facilities, thereby promoting cost recovery for the enterprises. “I’m talking about a built-out facility that can house about 20-30 agro-processors equipment, warehousing (and) finished products.”
Ali’s remarks also highlighted the financial constraints faced by GMSA members when it comes to attending international exhibitions. He stressed the need for increased financial support to enable members to participate in these valuable events. In this context, he revealed ongoing discussions with the government to secure a dedicated budget for supporting members’ participation in such exhibitions, underscoring their potential to foster business growth.
Moreover, Ali pointed to an upcoming exhibition in St. Vincent scheduled for October, outlining the vital role of government collaboration in ensuring adequate support for small agro-processors to participate and benefit from such opportunities.
He also revealed a collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture, the Private Sector Commission, and GMSA through a standing committee that the Ministry has established and the GMSA holds a seat. This committee provides a platform for strategic engagement to further the interests of the private sector, particularly the agro-processing industry.
The GMSA’s proactive efforts to establish industrial parks underscore its commitment to fostering growth and development among agro-processors in Guyana. This strategic approach, coupled with collaboration with the government and key stakeholders, may very well create an environment conducive to innovation, expansion, and sustainable success within the agro-processing sector.
