Dear Editor,
I would be grateful if you can grant the publication of this letter in your newspaper. I am the chairman of the Parika / Mora Social and Cultural Activities Committee, a multi-cultural group which since 2011 has commemorated African Emancipation in Parika, East BankEssequibo, except for a two year hiatus due necessarily to the Covid pandemic.
Last year we applied as previously done for the use of the White Fence Ground. We were turned down by the NDC, or more specifically by the Chairman of the NDC Mr . Jaideo Sookhoo, which effectively torpedoed the event though we did have a scaled down version at a less suitable venue.
This year we have applied againfor an event scheduled for the 20th August, and again are being turned down. The reason cited this time, as the last time, is that the ground is designated as an alcohol free zone. I emphasizedeach time to Mr Sookhoo, the Chairman, our intention to keep the ground alcohol free as the use of alcohol is not in keeping with the solemnity of the commemorative occasion. The Mr Jaideo switched to another reason and then switched back to his original reason.
Editor the White Fence is a public space for public use and it is being so used all the time. It is unconscionable and inconceivable that a civic group representing a large segment of the national demographic should be denied the use of such a space if they apply for this once a year to hold an event held sacred to them while other groups are allowed that facility. Your space would not permit me to elaborate on the implications and ominous ramifications of this, especially at this time in our nation’s evolvement into, presumably, a free, fair and just society.
We need the White Fence to facilitate the success of our Emancipation Commemoration and we don’t think that this is too much to ask or expect. I hope the highest authorities are alerted to this injustice and I invite their just intervention on our behalf.
Regards,
Leon Moses
Chairman, Parika Mora Social and Cultural Activities Committee
