Digicel Schools’ National Football Championships…
Kaieteur Sports – Today, the Round-of-16 stage of the Digicel Schools’ National Football Championship 2023 is set to unfold with four of the eight matches being contested at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Ground, Carifesta Avenue.
In the first match at 13:00 hrs, Tucville will lock horns with Region 2 Champion, Charity, while Region 9 Champion, St. Ignatius, clashes with the East Coast Champion, Buxton, at 15:00 hrs. The following match will pit Santa Rosa against Region 10 Champion, Mackenzie High, at 17:00 hrs and the day wraps up with Kwakwani going up against Waramuri Top at 19:00 hrs.
Tomorrow, August 3, the stage concludes with the final four matches that will see Carmel meet Region 6 Champion, Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) in the opening encounter at 13:00 hrs while Georgetown Champion, Dolphin, opposes Westminster at 15:00 hrs.
D.C Fox battle Region 5 Champion, Mahaicony Technical Institute, at 17:00 hrs and West Ruimveldt Secondary thrash it out with Charlestown at 19:00 hrs. The winners of these eight matches will advance to the quarterfinal stage.
On Monday, the Round-of-32 wrapped with five matches across the Edinburgh facility on the West Coast, the Scotts Ground in Berbice and the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) Ground.
At Edinburgh, Charlestown easily moved into the next round with a 4 – 1 win over Leonora. Goals from Andrew Carto (19’) and Malachi Barker (49’) along with own goals from Tromayne Hercules (61’) and D’Lessando Vallenzuela (70’) propelled the Georgetown team to victory despite the opposition’s consolation goal which was scored in the 78th minute by Findly Miggins.
In Game 2, Westminister prevailed 5 – 3 against North Ruimveldt as Samuel McAllister (7’ & 22’) led with a double with support from Tyreese Johnson (30’), Harod Haynes (32’) and Khy Austin (35’). The opposition’s goals were scored by Jevon Luck (75’ & 87’) and Calvin Bowlin.
In Berbice, Mahaicony had a goal each coming from Hiswar Kiene (10’), Dawrad Wilson (21’), Jaheim Drakes (66’) and Ezekiel Abel (78’) in their 4 – 2 win against Tutorial Academy. Dane Singh and Kadeem Henry were responsible for Tutorial Academy’s goals.
BEI won a hard-fought battle against Queen’s College as Daniel Arthur’s 15th minute goal became the decider that propelled BEI into the next round.
Over at the NIS Ground, Charity blasted eight unanswered goals past Marian Academy as Enrique Edwards (24’, 38’ & 67’) and Oundra Sobers (27’, 35’ & 60’) recorded doubles while Aron Williams (2’) and Dwayne Williams (20’) each found the back of net once.
