Kaieteur Sports – Top junior cyclist Alex Leung and teammate Brighton John rode away with the Flying Ace Cycling Club (FACC) organised 50-mile road race on Sunday along the Corentyne highway.
The two cyclist of the Team United Cycle Club crossed the line together to take the first two spots in the race which was sponsored by RaJ and Daughter Motor Bike Shop and staged in memory of Rajkumar Churaman.
The race, which was opened to all cyclists in Guyana, began in front of the entity’s establishment at Skeldon, Upper Corentyne. The riders then peddled to its branch at Portuguese Quarters before turning back to finish at its place of origin. The females and juveniles rode half the distance from the turn back point at Portuguese Quarters and proceeding to finish at Skeldon.
The two riders, Leung and John, covered the distance in a time of two hours 36 minutes and five seconds.
Leung subsequently declared the winner with John second. Curtis Dey was all alone as he rode home third. There was a duel for the fourth and fifth spots with the veteran Robin Persaud edging out Romello Crawford as Christopher Griffith ended in sixth.
It was a good day for Leung as he was also was adjudged the top junior on show with Aaron Newton coming in second.
Persaud was the top veteran, while Paul Choo-Wee-Nam came in second place while Alex Mendes was the third veteran to finish.
Alex Newton was the top juvenile with Sidwell Sandy being second.
Clevicia Spencer was the top female while Tandy Noel and Abigail Jeffrey rounded out the top three podium spots.
Leung really had things his way as he copped five sprint prizes, while John took four and Quame Reddy took the other.
The event was coordinated by cycling coach Randolph Roberts. According to Roberts the sponsors plans to make it an annual event. (Samuel Whyte)
