Digicel Schools National Football Championship…
Kaieteur Sports – Today, the Round-of-32 stage of the Digicel Schools’ National Football Championship will come to an end with two double-headers scheduled for the Edinburg Track and Field venue on the West Coast of Demerara and the Scotts School Ground in Berbice.
On the Westside, Charlestown will battle Leonora at 16:00 hrs and Westminster take on North Ruimveldt at 18:00 hrs.
In Berbice, Tutorial Academy face Region 5’s Champion, Mahaicony Technical Institute, at 14:00 hrs while Region 6’s Champion, Berbice Educational Institute, go up against Queen’s College at 16:00 hrs.
Yesterday, five more matches were contested in the stage; a double header unfolded at the Wisburg Ground in Linden and a triple-header unraveled at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Ground.
At the Wisburg venue, Kwakwani knocked out East Bank Champion, Soesdyke, in a nail-biter that ended, 5 – 3. Kelon Phillips’ helmet trick along with a successful strike from Shamar Gomes ensured their team a spot in the next round.
In the second match, Region 10 Champion, Mackenzie High outplayed East Ruimveldt and won 6 – 0. Dexter Milo was the star of the show with four goals while teammates Omarion Warrick and Jevon Dennis supported with one goal each.
In Georgetown, DC Fox bulldozed their way into the Round-of-16 with a massive 18 – 0 win over Vreed-en-Hoop in the opening match. Bevon Jones led with a whopping ten goals for his side while Carrington Isaacs supported with four goals, Bruce Williams recorded a double and Leon Larson found the back of the net, once.
East Coast’s Champion, Buxton, faced the axe when they met Excelsior Academy and were blown away with a 2 – 8 loss. Eight scorers were responsible for the winning team’s goals, they were: Jamal Collins, Dwayne Hames, Rickquan Alexander, Tyrese Lyle, Nivek Boyce, Omalie Vieira, Shaquille Sargeant and Adriano Wharton.
The other match of the day featured Santa Rosa going up against Richard Ishmael at 18:00 hrs. Details of this encounter will be available in our next issue.
On the opening day (Saturday) at the MoE Ground, Tucville comfortably got past Belladrum, 4 – 0, Waramuri Top defeated Vryman’s Erven, 5 – 0, Region 7’s Champion, St. Ignatius, trounced President’s College, 11 – 0, while Region 9’s Champion, Kato, lost to Carmel in a sudden death penalty shootout after they were deadlocked at 2 – 2 when the regulation whistle sounded.
At the NIS Ground, Georgetown Champion, Dolphin, secured a resounding 16 – 1 win against Brickdam, West Ruimveldt defeated Friendship, 14 – 0, and Region 2 Champion, Charity, easily won against Marian Academy 4 – 0.
Meanwhile, Tucville, Waramuri Top, St. Ignatius, Carmel, Dolphin, West Ruimveldt, Charity, D.C Fox, Kwakwani, Excelsior Academy, Mackenzie and the winner of the Santa Rosa/Richard Ishmael match, have claimed their spots in the Round-of-16 while four spots remain.
This season’s Regional Champions are Santa Rosa (Region 1), Charity (Region 2), Leonora (Region 3), Region 4 (East Coast) – Buxton, Region 4 (East Bank) – Soesdyke, Region 4 (Georgetown) – Dolphin, Mahaicony TI (Region 5), Berbice Educational Institute (Region 6), Bartica (Region 7), Kato (Region 8), St. Ignatius (Region 9) and Mackenzie High (Region 10).
