Dear Editor,
The recent statements that have come out from President Ali’s visit to China have made it unequivocally clear that the Ali Administration stands on the side of China as we enter into a period of immense global hostility. On the issue of Taiwan, the President has stated the he supports the One China principle, which means that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. This position does align with the position held by the US.
The U.S Department of State has made clear their country’s position:
“The United States approach to Taiwan has remained consistent across decades and administrations. The United States has a longstanding one China policy, which is guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, the three U.S.-China Joint Communiques, and the Six Assurances. We oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo from either side; we do not support Taiwan independence; and we expect cross-Strait differences to be resolved by peaceful means. We continue to have an abiding interest in peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. Consistent with the Taiwan Relations Act, the United States makes available defense articles and services as necessary to enable Taiwan to maintain a sufficient self-defence capability -– and maintains our capacity to resist any resort to force or other forms of coercion that would jeopardize the security, or the social or economic system, of Taiwan.”
According to the local press, President Ali was also quoted as saying Guyana is ready to closely communicate and collaborate with China to promote the building of a community with a shared future for humanity and establish a fairer and more equitable international order. This will be considered by many as a commitment to back China in the event of a war, but by staying neutral, Guyana can play a key role of peacemaker to help resolve the current conflict between the Superpowers on the critical issue of Taiwan.
The statement by the Chinese President that China and Guyana have broad common interests and similar positions in international and regional affairs followed by reference to the UN Security Council implies an expectation of support of the Chinese position on key global security issues. The current war between Russia and Ukraine followed by the military buildup around Taiwan has resulted in the world being divided by the powers of today.
Guyana must also consider the delicate situation which we are currently facing. Our financial future is currently dependent on the US and the oil sector with the U.S controlling the purse strings, while our indebtedness is closely tied to China due to the current structure of our loans. To put it simply, we need the U.S to pay China.
This means that we cannot afford to burn any bridges with either government, and we must go through a period of restructuring. The U.S. is currently restructuring to reduce dependence on China, and China is currently restructuring to also reduce its dependence on the U.S. Our citizens must come to an agreement in Parliament as to which path our country will take. Is it in support of the U.S, in support of China, or one of neutrality? There is currently a need for a neutral and independent Nation to help reduce tensions and find a peaceful solution to the current conflict. Such a position will also ensure stronger economic cooperation and development. We can restructure our economy and finances to reduce over dependence on both Superpowers during this critical period in human history. The Parliament must openly debate this key issue and come to a decision. Once we have chosen a position for the country to pursue, we must allow ourselves the time to prepare accordingly.
CRG encourages our young Nation and all citizens to pursue the path of neutrality during this time of increasing hostility between the powers of today.
Sincerely,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
Chairman
