Kaieteur Sports – Former Guyana youth cricketer Sharaz Ramcharran grabbed four wickets for 18 runs to help Apollo Sports Club beat defending champions Melbourne Sports Club by 25 runs last Saturday at Centennial Park, Etobicoke, Canada.
It was another preliminary round match in the 2023 Canadian Commonwealth Cricket Association of Toronto 40-overs competition.
The off-spinner Ramcharran bowled seven tidy overs as Melbourne Sports Club was dashed out for 72 in 23.2 overs after Apollo Sports Club had made a modest 97 all out in 32.2 overs.
Apart from Ramcharran, who strategically opened the bowling, his fellow Guyana youth player Kevin Umroa also bowled splendidly well to finish with 3-19 from his maximum eight overs on a responsive pitch.
Pacer Horton Whitley supported with 2-13 in his four-over outing while another ex-Guyana under-17 player, left-arm orthodox spinner Dennis Legay closed off things with 1-3.
Only Miguel Gordon offered some resistance with 15 as wickets fell regularly under a blue sky.
Essequibian and former Guyana youth batsman Nathan Persaud also played an instrumental role for Apollo Sports Club with two catches and an impressive stumping.
Earlier, Apollo Sports Club won the toss and opted to take first strike but the decision backfired on them as they too lost wickets in a cluster.
Opener Harrinarine Chattergoon hit a top-score of 25 while Persaud chipped in with a vital 17.
Former Barbados and West Indies off-spinner Ryan Hurley took 3-16 from 8 economical overs while seamer Hafeez Ullah also claiming three wickets but conceded 34 runs off eight overs as well.
Eugene LaFleur, the left-arm orthodox spinner snatched 2-4 from 6.2 overs. Both Chattergoon and LaFleur represented Guyana at the regional Under-19 level.
The 14-team competition is slated to continue today, Saturday. Apollo Sports Club still remaining at the top of the points’ table and Melbourne Sports Club behind at number 2.
