Kaieteur News – It was the legendary Roman General, Gaius Julius Caesar, who reported to the Senate, “veni, vidi, vici” (I came, I saw, I conquered) after a quick vanquishing of foes at the Battle of Zela.
In the oil battlefields of Guyana, ExxonMobil’s American Caesar, Mr. Alistair Routledge, similarly toyed with paltry locals in what was a fight of verbal assault before Guyana’s High Court. Through ExxonMobil’s mouthpieces, he made sure that his company’s ascendant and unassailable position was rammed home. It was more than a dismissive putdown by ExxonMobil, it was a finger twisted in the eye of all Guyana, particularly its sacred judiciary.
“The grant of the reliefs sought is in any event discretionary. The land acquisition process for the Project has been completed, and to require the quashing of the Permit, and its re-application, in circumstances in which it would almost automatically be reissued would be a waste of public time and resources.” In more basic language, what ExxonMobil said there was this: regardless of how the courts of Guyana adjudicated on the matter at hand, as it related to the Wales gas-to-energy project, it did not matter, it was of no consequence, possessed no meaning, had no standing, and was nothing but useless. For, whatever the decision of Guyana’s court, it was going to be undone, and unceremoniously kicked into the garbage can, as in quickly reversed. This is what our courts have been reduced to, a formality, this is what our oil wealth is to ExxonMobil, a pawn pushed around at its convenience
It is where an American company, with the raucous arrogance of ExxonMobil, can talk about “waste of public time and resources” in disdainful condemnation of our processes, and get away with it. Because we have one national leader that is a conspicuous example of a collaborator, and pronounced impotency. Because Guyanese have another national leader that is so entwined with ExxonMobil that there would be extreme difficulty detecting which anatomy is Guyanese, and which is American. Because there is a third national leader that is the equivalent of an eclipse during the height of the blazing midday sun. Meaning, not one soul can observe presence, have any confidence of existence, or that there is substance.
This is why an ExxonMobil can be so scornful, so disrespectful, so reckless as to speak uncaringly about “waste of public time and resources” because Guyana’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will do what is right for the company. Even if such is at the expense of Guyanese best interests, regardless whether such action furnishes additional confirmation of the shackled and sorry state of the EPA. We have these foreign carpetbaggers rushing here to establish themselves and feast on the rich milk of the passive Guyana cow, and we have the shameless Guyanese scalawags who aid and abet them every step of the way, and comfort them, too.
Things have degraded so far that a multinational corporation with the global stature of ExxonMobil could come to this country and insult our daughters and sisters with the slur of “busybodies.” Thus, the Daughters of the Guyana Revolution are smeared and tarred for having no legal standing, no rights of ownership, and are merely nuisances. The Confederacy may be making a comeback in Texas, the home of ExxonMobil, but courageous and conscientious Guyanese must devote every thought, concentrate every fiber, at thwarting these oppressors, mockers, and exploiters. The vision of those from America is to turn back the clock two hundred years, and bring back the yoke of slavery on Guyanese for their wealth.
Guyanese speak out and they are treated to the contempt of “obstructionists” by one of their own brothers of the Guyanese soil. And when Guyanese with the necessary abdominal fortitude appeal to the court for relief, they are laughed at, and made fun of, with the assertion that such is a “waste of public time and resources.” Guyanese have a stark choice before them: rollover and pretend to go along happily (like some sick dog) at the abuses and assaults that come from both domestic and foreign sources for their precious property. Or they can get up, standup, and shut up all those who take them for granted.
