Dem boys seh…
Kaieteur News – Is nat de frequency of de press conferences de problem. Is de purpose of de pressers. Every week dem reporters gat to sit down fuh close to two hours fuh listen to one big buse-out and cuss-out of de Opposition and de odder critics of the de government.
If de frequency of press conference was a measure of press freedom, then people would have had to ask why de Prezzy holding such few pressers and why so many restrictions were imposed on the recent presidential presser.
But de real problem is not de amount of pressers but why they are being called. Every Thursday is one buse out. Responding to criticisms deserve more refinement and a different mode of communication.
De Thursday pressers are like a verbal boxing matches. De purpose is to unleash a salvo on critics of the government. Dese Thursday’s pressers are like a schoolyard shouting matches. And de media holding court over this disgraceful state of affairs
De rules are simple. Summon de media on Thursday, hurl a few jabs, thrown in a few insults, all with the intention of responding to what de Opposition seh a few hours before in their pressers which too are being distorted as platforms for critiquing government. .
De Thursday pressers are becoming like a running soap opera. Every Thursday is a different episode, with plenty mud-slinging thrown in for fair measure.
It is reducing press freedom to an illusion. The press is now being summoned to partisan squabbling, and which while entertaining can hardly be deemed as respectful to the Fourth Estate.
So let us not get carried away with de amount of press conferences but rather lament their purpose. It is time for the media to seize the higher ground and demand a more dignified form of informative communication. Until then, welcome to “Thursday Throwdowns,” where the press conference has become a pawn in the endless game of tit-for-tat politics.
Talk half. Leff half.
