…as NGO celebrates 32 years of service
Kaieteur News – Food For The Poor (FFTP) Guyana Inc. in commemorating its 32nd anniversary has called on companies to help improve the lives of the less fortunate.
On Saturday evening, the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) held its anniversary dinner and awards ceremony at the Pegasus Hotel where it recognized the efforts of its dedicated team members.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FFTP (Guy) Inc., Kent Vincent while delivering brief remarks pointed to a few of the organization’s accomplishments over the years as he called on corporate entities to give back to those in need in the country.
Vincent said, “Food For The Poor Guyana would like to collaborate with any company, organization, agency, or Non-Governmental Organization, both locally and internationally, to provide assistance to those in need. We want companies to note that FFTP (Guy) Inc. is here to assist in their corporate social responsibilities to the citizens of Guyana, as we have a proven track record and expertise.”
The CEO noted that the organization has been making contributions to the Health Ministry, the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), health centers across the country as well other institutions and individuals in need.
Moreover, he pointed out that FFTP has expanded its presence in Regions One, Seven, Eight, Nine and 10 over the past two years to offer aid to those in desperate conditions.
He therefore urged, “As we move beyond 32 years, let us strive to improve the lives of the less fortunate and make a positive impact on underprivileged communities across the country.”
Meanwhile, Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai in delivering the feature address lauded FFTP for its significant role in the country. She noted that it was established at a time in Guyana when the people were in most need, where it was able to assist with distributing basic items such as food, clothing and other household essentials. In addition, the Minister also recognized the organization for its support to the country’s education and health sector.
To this end, Sukhai noted, “Today FFTP has supported economic resources to communities that would help to generate income, of course employment, it supports food security and improvement of village and community infrastructure.”
She explained that the support services offered by the organization have transformed to meet the needs of an evolving country with FFTP pursuing a more intent role of expanding their outreaches and implementing economically sustainable projects to help communities.
In this regard, the Minister said, “I join Mr. Vincent and Co-Chair to encourage you and all of corporate Guyana to remain partners and continue to support the work of FFTP Guyana Inc.”
FFTP Guyana commemorated 32 years of serving the needy on June 3.
In addition to its distribution activities, the organization has been involved in Sustainable Community Projects. The local NGO has been supporting agricultural projects by funding pigs, sheep and poultry projects as well as shade houses to help generate income for families especially in Hinterland areas.
FFTP Guyana was established since June 3, 1991 in Guyana, but even though the NGO has managed to branch out to more regions in the country, with the support of its generous local and overseas donors, the organisation is hoping to expand the Sustainable Community Development Programme to be able to create jobs and livelihood opportunities.
FFTP Inc, according to its website, is an ecumenical Christian non-profit organisation based in Coconut Creek, Florida, United States that provides food, medicine, and shelter, among other services, to the poor in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In its vision statement, the organisation states: “Food For The Poor is God’s instrument to help the materially poor and to renew the poor in spirit.”
Apart from the support it receives from FFTP international, there are also other donors that make regular contributions to the local organisation. These would usually come from a number of groups, religious bodies and other NGOs. Local companies too would make donations upon request.
