Digicel Schools’ Football National Championship…
– Kicks off July 29
Kaieteur Sports – Yesterday, the Petra Organisation officially launched the fixtures for the Digicel Schools’ Football National Championship’s Round-of-32 stage ahead of the kick off, which is scheduled for July 29, at the Ministry of Education (MoE) and National Insurance Scheme (NIS) Grounds, Carifesta Avenue.
Following the completion of 95% of the Regional Championships, 32 teams have qualified for the country-wide event. The focus now shifts to Region Seven, where Bartica and the KFC Goodwill Champion, D.C Fox (Waramadong), collide on July 27 at the MoE Ground to decide the Regional Champion.
This season’s Regional Champions are Santa Rosa (Region 1), Charity (Region 2), Leonora (Region 3), Region 4 (East Coast) – Buxton, Region 4 (East Bank) – Soesdyke, Region 4 (Georgetown) – Dolphin, Mahaicony TI (Region 5), Berbice Educational Institute (Region 6), Kato (Region 8), St. Ignatius (Region 9) and Mackenzie High (Region 10).
At the simple ceremony held at Spice Garden, Tournament Coordinator, Lavern Fraser-Thomas and Petra Co-Director, Troy Mendonca, disclosed the current status of the tournament.
On July 29, four matches are billed for the MoE Ground while three matches will be played at the NIS venue.
At the MoE Ground, the action kicks off at noon with Tucville versus Bartica then Vryman’s Erven collides with Waramuri Top at 14:00 hrs. In the other two matches at the venue President’s College will tackle St. Ignatius and Kato take on Carmel at 16:00 hrs and 18:00 hrs, respectively.
Over at NIS, the triple-header starts at 12:00hrs as Dolphin battle Brickdam before Friendship take on West Ruimveldt at 14:00 hrs then Marian Academy go head-to-head with Charity at 16:00 hrs.
The following day, July 30, the five matches on the card will see Kwakwani versus Soesdyke and Mackenzie High versus East Ruimveldt at the Wisburg Ground at 14:00 hrs and 16:00 hrs, respectively.
The other three matches that are scheduled to take place at the MoE Ground are D.C Fox versus Vreed-en-Hoop, Buxton versus Excelsior Academy and Santa Rosa versus Richard Ishmael at 14:00 hrs, 16:00 hrs and 18:00 hrs, respectively.
Day three of the Round-of-32 features four matches with double-headers at the Edinburg Facility and Scott Ground. On the Westside, Charlestown will battle Leonora and Westminster takes on North Ruimveldt while in Berbice, Tutorial Academy face Mahaicony Technical Institute and Berbice Educational Institute go up against Queen’s College.
Petra’s Co-Director, Mendonca, disclosed that he has witnessed some intriguing football over the past weeks in the tournament and wishes to thank the sponsor, Digicel Guyana, for once again making this event possible, which will aid in the development of grassroots football in a major way.
