Kaieteur News – The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) has seized US$1,067,637 (US$993,000 in cannabis and US$ 74,000 in cocaine) in illegal drugs during the first half of 2023. This represents the seizure of fewer drugs for the first half of the year when compared to same period the last year, its mid-year report said.
According to the Unit’s statistical report released on Friday from January to June 2023, CANU seized a total of 677.40 kilograms of narcotics when compared to some 2,106.58 kilogrammes for the same period in 2022.
“The Customs Anti Narcotic Unit through the period of January to June 2023 seized approximately 677.40 kgs of narcotics, consisting of 662.40 kgs of cannabis, 14.80 kgs of cocaine, 10 grams of hashish and 90 grams of ecstasy,” the CANU report stated.
Meanwhile, the Region 4 district remains the drug capital of the country with CANU seizing some 294.692 kilograms of drugs.
Out of that amount 279 kilograms were marijuana while 14 kilograms were cocaine and 20 grammes were Ecstasy.
New Amsterdam followed closely behind with a total of 237 kilogrammes of drugs being seized by CANU with 251 kilogrammes alone being cannabis.
According to the report, of the 30 drug cases before the court, CANU has secured 27 convictions.
CANU has also assisted police in seizing four illegal firearms along with over a 1000 rounds of ammunition during its operations this year.
