Kaieteur Sports – The Overseas Disturbance Group is made up mostly of former residents and sports personalities from the New Amsterdam and Canje areas in Berbice now domicile overseas. They have been assisting those back home in various ways.
The group has organized a three-a-side small goal football competition in memory of Nigel ‘Bully’ Barnes a former resident and sports personality of Shoe Lane, New Amsterdam Berbice.
Action is set for Sunday July 23rd, beginning at 2pm at the New Amsterdam Basketball Court, Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam.
Six teams are expected to participate in the day’s competition which will see seven matches being played with the matches being of 20 minutes duration each.
The teams will be divided into two groups made up of three teams each. The teams will play each other in the respective groups with the top two advancing to play the top two in the other group. The winners will contest the final with the losers meeting for the third spot.
Trophies and other incentives will be awarded to the winning teams and outstanding individual players. The players from the three top teams will all be presented with trophies.
Barnes, a former resident of Shoe Lane, New Amsterdam, Berbice was a student of the Berbice High School where he participated in a number of sporting and extra-curricular activities.
He represented the County and the Cougars Football Club at football and was a regular fixture from the U16 level up to first division.
Barnes was also a competent athlete and represented the New Amsterdam/Canje District on a regular basis at the national school athletics championship with success.
He subsequently migrated to Canada where he lived with his family. (Samuel Whyte)
