Kaieteur News – A prisoner at the Brickdam Police lock-ups is claiming that he accidently started a fire in his cell on Sunday after lighting a piece of toilet paper to smoke out mosquitoes. The fire reportedly started around 06:40hrs.
The inmate identified as Stephan Howard, reportedly told police that when he entered the lock-ups on Saturday he found a lighter and a piece of toilet paper inside his cell. He alleged that mosquitoes began biting him during the wee hours of Sunday, so he lit the toilet paper and placed it on his cell door to smoke them out.
About ten minutes later, the suspect reportedly realized that the lit toilet paper had fallen onto a mattress on the cell floor and ignited a fire.
Kaieteur News understands that other inmates had seen the flames in his cell raised and alarm by shouting fire, fire, fire.
Howard, however, claimed that he managed to extinguish the fire with water from a plastic bottle he had with him.
After making his verbal statement, Howard reportedly told police that he had nothing more to say and refused to put his claims in writing or facilitate a video interview.
The fire resulted in no major damage to the lock-ups. Investigations are ongoing.
