Kaieteur News – Why is it that people think that they can come here and shove a stick at Guyanese? If it was a stick in the face, that may have been shrugged off, despite its offensiveness, but, when it is a stick shoved in other parts of the anatomy of law-abiding citizens of this country, then all Guyanese should have a serious problem. This was what BOSAI Minerals did during the commissioning ceremony for its new US$150 million project in Region 10.
Guyana’s President Ali was there, so were ministers of the government, and the Chinese Ambassador. To think that BOSAI would even attempt to humiliate Guyanese by blocking them from attending and reporting on such an expensive project, indicates the arrogance that it harbors, confirms its confidence that the PPPC Government led by the same President Ali (present) would do absolutely nothing to correct the outrage, what Guyanese call ‘eye-pass.’ These foreigners are not only making their eyes pass us, they are dropping their pants publicly and mooning this whole nation.
Respect is not due just to the President and his ministers. Every ounce of respect that BOSAI can summon is due to all Guyanese. From the workers they allegedly squeeze and then penalize for talking to the press. From the independent private media reporters locked out from attending the US$150 million Maz project. From the elected representatives of the residents of Region 10 that were either not invited or were dissed by the actions of BOSAI.
Where is President Ali when he should be pronouncing sharply on what BOSAI did? When he says nothing, the perception is that he maybe gives silent approval for BOSAI to behave as it did. The President cannot pretend that that was a private occasion, and that BOSAI could pick and choose who attends and who is prevented from entering beyond the gates. What has to be said also is that when either President Ali, or Vice President Jagdeo, restricts the independent Guyanese media, especially by inviting only State-owned media, to their press conferences, the foreigners take note. They take that as license to do the same with members of the free and independent media.
As much as the likes of BOSAI should be told to clean up its act, or risk the wrath of the Guyana Government, it is a sad day, when President Ali could be at a function, and his own people are barred as though they are lepers or criminals. The PPPC Government and its agents insult, attack, and embarrass Guyanese. Now outsiders take it upon themselves to do the same, knowing all the time that a sick PPPC Government is wholeheartedly on their side. Any President, any national leader, with a smidgen of self-respect, with complete regard for the range of his responsibilities, any concern for the dignity and rights of the Guyanese people can never agree to what BOSAI did.
We wait to hear what is going to come from the Office of the President, or what farce will emerge from the Department of Public Information, as to what is going to be done to BOSAI to impress upon the company and its senior management that what happened must not be repeated. We pay keen attention to observe that, in the absence of any action or posture from government quarters, who else and who next is going to believe that they can spit upon and kick around Guyanese and be allowed to get away with such barbarous attitudes.
Foreign companies come here with sweet words for conniving, and collaborating, political leaders, and with the priority of the sweet deals they workout with them. What has become obvious is that lurking right below the surface is the scale of exploitations they have in mind for Guyanese. They are doing so more and more openly now, and when the exposure of the press is sought, Guyanese are punished. The independent media is punished for publishing wrongs that Guyanese experience at the hands of foreigners. All the while, politicians pretend not to see, don’t want to know. Citizens must decide where they stand, if they like how their government allows abuse to be poured on them, and their watchdogs to be muzzled, and then kicked.
