Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – It is amazing how people, by their individual and collective actions, can influence and shape the course of national politics. One such individual was Ashton Chase who until recently was the only surviving member of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC), the forerunner of the People’s Progressive Party. The other founder members of the PAC were Cheddi Jagan, Janet Jagan and HJM Hubbard.
The late Ashton Chase started out his political career at an early age and even though he was one of the founding members of the Political Affairs Committee and played an active role in the 1947 elections campaign in support of Dr. Jagan, he could not have voted because of his age. In those days, the franchise was restricted to only those who were twenty-one years and over, subject to other qualifications. Dr. Jagan won a seat in the Legislature, which at that time was a major victory for the working class. Chase had the distinction of being appointed the first Minister of Labour in the short-lived PPP government of 1953 which lasted a mere six months.
Service to country is the highest and most noble form of service. The fact that Ashton Chase was awarded Guyana’s highest national award is testimony to this fact. The numerous tributes paid to him by national and regional leaders are highly deserving for someone who dedicated his entire life to the cause of a better Guyana. As pointed out by so many who paid tributes, Ashton Chase was a simple and unassuming individual who would so often go out of his way to help those in need.
My condolences to his relatives, comrades, and friends on the passing of this outstanding son of the soil. As pointed out by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, Ashton Chase was a pillar of democracy who contributed significantly to the independence struggle and for a democratic society. He was actively involved in the national conversation on the way forward for the country spanning several decades.
The late Comrade Chase certainly made his contribution to his country. Guyana is indeed poorer for his passing. May his soul rest in peace!
