2023 RAN Championship…
Kaieteur Sports – In a challenging display of sportsmanship, the Guyana National Under 19 Rugby Team experienced a series of losses at the 2023 Rugby America’s North (RAN) tournament in Kingston Jamaica, losing all four matches in Pool-B, including two defeats to the host Jamaica.
The RAN tournament commenced on the 12 July and will culminate on 16 July at the University of the West Indies, Mona Bowl Campus. The tournament, which featured Men’s U19 teams from Bermuda, Cayman Island, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and host Jamaica.
The young Green Machile campaign began with high spirits as they took to the field against Bermuda. Unfortunately, they faced a difficult start and were unable to secure victory in their opening match against Bermuda; losing 48-0. The subsequent games proved equally challenging, leaving the players grappling with adversity on multiple fronts; losing to Jamaica 36-0 to close a woeful opening day of the tournament.
Day two, they met with Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica for a second match, they eventually loss both encounters, 33-0 and 37-0 respectively. Despite displaying resilience and determination, the young ruggers faced an uphill battle against their motivated opponents.
Notably, throughout the tournament, the young players showcased moments of brilliance, demonstrating their potential and dedication to the sport. While the tournament did not yield the desired outcomes for the U19 boys, it serves as a valuable learning experience for the budding athletes.
Meanwhile, the team will now regroup, reflect on their performance, and identify areas for improvement with the guidance of their coach Larry Adonis, as they focus on their Fifth and Sixth-place clash with Cayman Island today. The Men’s U19 final will be played between host Jamaica and USA South at 15:00 hours.
