Kaieteur News – The Alliance for Change (AFC) said it has noted the announcement by the Ministry of Health in neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago of the first case of Monkey Pox in the twin island republic.
In light of the regular travel between Guyana and Trinidad, the AFC calls on the Ministry of Health of Guyana to issue an advisory on travel to and from Trinidad; and to state the protocols that would be implemented to prevent the spread of Monkey Pox to Guyana. In a press release the AFC said if there are protocols already in place, the nation and airlines should be reminded of these.
According to WHO, the virus was discovered in Denmark in 1958 in monkeys kept for research, and the first reported human case of monkey pox was a nine-month-old boy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1970. Monkey Pox can spread from person to person or occasionally from animals to people. Following eradication of smallpox in 1980 and the end of smallpox vaccination worldwide, monkey pox steadily emerged in Central, East and West Africa.
The United States has the highest number of deaths and cases (30,555 and 45 respectively), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website notes. WHO says people can contract monkey pox from contaminated objects such as clothing or linens, through injuries in health care, or in community settings such as tattoo parlors.
