Dear Editor,
I wish to address the ongoing discussions surrounding the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC). It has come to my attention that the ERC is being labeled as highly political. I would like to clarify the situation and provide my perspective.
First and foremost, it is essential to recognize the importance of the Ethnic Relations Commission in fostering harmony and understanding among various ethnic and cultural groups within our city and country. The establishment of the ERC was a significant step towards promoting unity, eradicating discrimination, and mitigating any potential conflicts arising from ethnic differences.
I firmly believe that the ERC should be an independent and non-partisan body, devoid of political interference. It is crucial for the ERC to maintain its integrity and impartiality to effectively carry out its mandate of promoting equality, respect, and inclusivity. The commission’s members should be chosen based on their expertise, commitment to fairness, and dedication to the principles of social cohesion.
However, I acknowledge that concerns have been raised regarding the perceived politicization of the commission. It is regrettable that any organization designed to bridge divides and foster understanding has become a subject of political maneuvering. The politicization of the ERC undermines its credibility and erodes public trust in its ability to perform its duties effectively.
As the Mayor of Georgetown, I urge all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, and citizens, to prioritize the greater good of our city and the nation as a whole. We must work together to ensure that the ERC remains an impartial body that upholds the principles of justice, inclusivity, and equality for all.
I call upon the relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate any allegations of political interference within the ERC. It is imperative that we restore public confidence in this vital institution and allow it to carry out its responsibilities without hindrance.
In conclusion, I reiterate my commitment to fostering unity and harmony within our diverse country. The Ethnic Relations Commission plays a crucial role in achieving this goal. Let us work towards depoliticizing the ERC and creating an environment where all Guyanese can live together in peace and mutual respect.
Pt. Ubraj Narine, JP, COA
Mayor
City of Georgetown
