Kaieteur Sports – Tianna Springer will look to make history once again after being named by the Athletics Association of Guyana as one of the representatives at the Youth Commonwealth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.
During this year’s South American U20 Athletics Championship held in Colombia, Springer not only represented Guyana but also set a new event record in the girls’ 400m.
With exceptional performances, she broke her Personal Best not once but twice, ultimately securing the gold medal with an impressive time of 53.32s in Bogota.
Moreover, her outstanding performance set a new South American U20 Championships in Athletics 400m record.
Springer was only two years old when Brazil’s Bárbara de Oliveira established the previous record of 53.44s at the Championships in São Paulo in 2009.
Adding to her accolades, Springer also clinched victory in the 400m event at the CARIFTA Games held in The Bahamas. Now, she aims to add a medal from the Youth Commonwealth Games to her growing collection.
Springer will be joined by Javon Roberts, who won gold in the 800m at the 2023 CARIFTA Games.
CARICOM 10k winner Attoya Harvey, Malaki Austin, and DeJon Grant will also represent Guyana at the Youth Commonwealth Games.
Julian Edmonds has been appointed as the team’s coach.
Boxer Keevin Allicock’s silver, achieved at the 2007 games in The Bahamas, is Guyana’s only Youth Commonwealth Games medal.
