Kaieteur News – A 26-year-old motorcyclist on Saturday night lost his life tragically after riding into oncoming traffic at Unity, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Dead is Joe McGarrell, a mechanic of Mahaicony, ECD. According to information received by Kaieteur News, McGarrell attempted to overtake a vehicle along the Unity Public Road but accidently ended up riding into the front of another car that was travelling in the opposite direction.
According to police, the accident took place around 20:45hrs. The driver of the car said that McGarrell crashed into him and alleged that he was driving east along the northern side of the public road while the victim was riding in the opposite direction with no headlights on.
The man continued his allegations that as they approached each other, at fast rate of speed McGarrell attempted to overtake a vehicle in front him (McGarrell) but ended-up crashing into the front of his car.
The motorcyclist was flung off of his bike and the driver lost control of his car and crashed into a light pole pinning him inside.
According to police, the motorcyclist was picked up shortly after, in an unconscious condition and taken to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital. The driver too was removed from his car in a conscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
McGarrell later died while receiving medical attention while the driver remains hospitalized with a fractured right hand and injuries to his body.
Investigations are ongoing.
