Dear Editor,
I was an employee of Bosai Minerals Group (Guyana) Inc. (BMGG) for 15 years being employed from 18 April 2008. During this period, I worked in two departments for the periods April 2008 – Jan 2010 and from Jan 2010 – June 2023.
The latter department, I worked for approximately 13 years for which I would say I performed reasonably well given negative circumstances that were prevalent and poor systems that was given to me to perform at an acceptable level.
From the 25th Jan 2023, I proceeded on a period of prolonged sick leave that came to an end on the 4th June 2023. I prepared to return to work on Monday 5th June with a signed medical note from a medical practitioner based in Georgetown only to be told that I had to present a comprehensive medical report to be able to resume work and I was sent home for same. The second in charge of the department called me on my mobile phone on Monday afternoon to inquire if I had gotten the medical report to which I replied in the negative and was then informed that management would like to meet with me on Tuesday, 6th June at 09:00 hrs.
At this meeting, I was informed that for the past several years my work performance was poor, among other faults, for which I was never given a verbal or written warning. I was subsequently told that I was basically dismissed with immediate effect. The only disciplinary action I am aware of taken against me during this time was one letter for arriving to work late in 2019 for which I had a very valid reason of which I had informed management.
Editor, with such matters, you do not know where to turn for help as the workers’ union for my part is not functioning effectively. But I would like to let my fellow Guyanese brothers and sisters know what happens to some of their fellow countrymen and more so an Indigenous citizen. At this time, I would like for the present, potential local and foreign buyers & suppliers of BMGG to inquire from the company the treatment of their workers. Finally, I am kindly asking the Ministry of Labour to investigate this matter.
Sincerely,
Kevin Spencer
