Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Squash Association (GSA) 2023 National Senior’s Squash Championship, sponsored by Guinness, commenced on Tuesday at the Georgetown Club Courts (GTC) on Camp Street, Georgetown. The opening day showcased eighteen exhilarating matches, including two Women’s National draw matches, four Men’s Veterans Over-50 matches, and twelve Men’s National draw category matches.
The competition kicked off with great intensity on Tuesday, as Larissa Wiltshire and Kirsten Gomes secured early victories in the Women’s draw matches. While in the Men’s Over-50 category, Joseph Mekdeci, Rob Edwards, and Narendra Singh displayed dominant performances on the opening day. The largest draw of the tournament, the Men’s draw, witnessed a mix of results between young stars and senior squash players, raising expectations for day two of the competition.
The first match featured Joseph Mekdeci against Michael Atherly, with Mekdeci prevailing 3-0 due to his experience. In a closely contested matchup, Dennis Dias fell short against Rob Edwards, losing 3-1 in favour of Edwards (12-10, 5-11, 11-7, 12-10). Lloyd Fung-A-Fat also suffered a 3-1 defeat against Narendra Singh in the final Men’s Over-50 match of the evening.
Over in the Women’s division, Larissa Wiltshire comfortably defeated young Safirah Sumner in three games, with scores of 11-2, 11-2, and 11-6. While in the other Women’s National draw match, former female U19 star Kirsten Gomes dominated the talented Malia Maikoo, securing a convincing 3-0 victory with an impressive 11-1 win in all three games.
Summing up the Men’s National draw on the opening day, Regan Pollard defeated Avinash Oditt 3-0, Nandishraj Singh lost to Mohryah Baksh 3-0, and Deje Dias emerged victorious against young Demetrius DeAbreu with scores of 11-6, 11-6, and 11-7. Ben Mekdeci defeated Josh Verwey in three games, while Nicholas Verwey overcame Jeremy Ten Pow 11-6, 11-3, 11-4. Jason van Djik triumphed over Chad DeAbreu in an exciting display of squash, with scores of 11-7, 11-3, and 11-4.
Steven Xavier demonstrated that experience prevails over skill, in a hard-fought contest against Andrew Peroune, securing a 3-0 victory. Peter DeGroot defeated Richard Rodrigues 3-0, Samuel Ince-Carvalhal outplayed Justin Ten Pow in three games, Jerazeno Bell raced to a three-game win against Lee Fung-A-Fat, Jonathan Antczak defeated Dane Pereira, and reigning U19 champion Michael Alphonso concluded the evening in style with a convincing win over Miguel Wong (11-0, 11-2, 11-6).
Guinness proudly serves as the title sponsor for the national seniors squash championship for the second consecutive year.
