8th Digicel Schools Football Championships…
– Region 2 finale set for today at Anna Regina
Kaieteur Sports – On Tuesday evening, Buxton Secondary School became the East Coast Regional Champion of the 8th Digicel’s Schools Football Championship, following a stunning 2 – 1 victory in the finale against President’s College, at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Ground.
It was a testing match for both sides, but the eventual victor was the first to draw blood when Leon McFarlene scored in the 27th minute, then made it a two-possession game two minutes later when Ovid Brown found the back of the net.
The match, which got a bit physical, saw Shamar Barrington pull one back in the 38th minute for President’s College, however, the equaliser eluded them for the entire match, even though Brown was dealt a red card late in the second half.
These two finalists will now move on to the National Championships.
In Region Six, Vryman’s Erven logged a historic win over Central Corentyne with a whopping 25 – 0 score line at the regulation time whistle.
There was a super six and three fivers that contributed to the tally; Joshua Dougall fired in six goals (2’, 23’ 27, 38’, 46 & 53’), while Akeem Hosannah (4’, 31’, 35’, 37’ & 51’), Royan Captain (6’, 30’, 40’, 54’ & 59’) and Keron Gorge (14’, 30’, 32’, 52’ & 53’) each scored five goals.
Shumar Beresford (56’ & 57’) fired in two quick goals while Stephen Frank (19’) found the back of the net once. Central Corentyne were under so much fire that Shem Thompson even gifted the opposition an own goal in the 17th minute.
In Region Two, Abraham Zuil trounced Aurora 4 – 0 at Tapakuma as Omar Kendall (27’ & 43’), Lester Noel (38’) and Traven Evans (60’) accounted for the goals while Cotton Field were award with a walkover win against Johanna Cecilia.
In the Region Six, Tutorial Academy triumphed by the same score (4 – 0) over Canje at Scott Ground. Done Singh’s hat-trick (6’, 46’ & 58’) led the way while Clevon Cort supported with a 48th minute goal.
Today, Region Two’s champion will be crowned at Anna Regina following two intriguing semifinal showdowns, which took place yesterday at the same venue. In the first semi Abraham Zuil took on Cotton Field while Charity battled with Anna Regina; the winners advance to today’s finale.
In Regions Six and Ten, the finalists will be decided following the highly anticipated semifinal stage.
At Scott Ground in the Ancient County, New Amsterdam and Vryman’s Erven will collide in the zone’s lone match of the day at 14:00hrs.
In the Mining Town, Wisburg Ground is the venue that will host the double-header which begins at 14:00 hrs with the first match between Christianburg/Wismar and Mackenzie High then Kwakwani meet Wisburg in the other semi at 16:00 hrs.
The action also continues in Region One at Green Park, where Hosororo and Port Kaituma are scheduled to battle at 13:00 hrs.
There is also a lone Region 4 – Georgetown fixture that features Brickdam and South Ruimveldt, which kicks off at 17:00 hrs at the Ministry of Education Ground.
