Dear Editor,
“Our Wealth, Our Country” laments that the PPP Government is moving from scandal to scandal, yet they can find it possible to revel in mirth and merriment celebrating Local Government Election victories, with a lavish flow of food and drinks.
All of this, while the nation is waiting on the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to review the Police file in haste and pronounce on whether charges will be filed against Minister Dharamlall who have been accused of rape and sodomy. The fiery deaths of 20 of our young Amerindian children snuffed out when they were locked in the dormitory and could not escape, shocked the entire nation and reverberated across the world.
As they held hands of human chains in many schools around Guyana, all school children understood the failure of our governmental systems in following up on safety and security recommendations contained in various inspection reports. The Ministry of Education is passing the buck and blaming the Ministry of Regional Development, whose Minister is the embattled Minister arrested for allegations of rape and sodomy. We urge full and substantial monetary compensation and punitive damages for all the families, for apparent criminal negligence and reckless endangerment of the Mahdia children. We also urge that the President establish the promised Commission of Inquiry (COI) with urgent haste. Why the delay? Swift and substantial punishment must be meted out to all who were in dereliction of duty.
The Ministers with shared responsibilities for the school children in the dorms must face the music too and not go unscathed. The buck stops with them. In the ongoing saga of the vile and reprobate accusations of sexual grooming, violent rape and sodomy of an Amerindian schoolgirl – a minor – we join the chorus of concerned groups calling for the removal and termination of the Minister facing the allegations.
With the graphic, X-rated accusations made, even if dismissed due to technicalities and maneuverings, this Minister will not enjoy the confidence of the Guyanese people. Government must save its reputation now. And as if two scandals were not enough, the Government will now have to explain why is it the head of oil company HESS told a J.P. Morgan 2023 Energy, Power & Renewables Conference audience that the President of Guyana assured him that a stay of the Insurance ruling by Judge Sandil Kissoon would be put in place. In an audiotape, the HESS Head said, “…the President was very emphatic that a stay would be put in place that would have no impact on production. The stay was put in place. There is no impact on production….” OWOC is concerned that the rule of law is under threat if business groups can go to the President directly seeking solace and interventions if they do not like court decisions.
This is quite disturbing, as ordinary Guyanese do not have the privilege of seeking presidential assistance if they do not like court decisions. OWOC calls on the President to clear the air on this matter. OWOC is a registered civic society group advocating for transparency, accountability and good governance of Guyana’s resources.
