Kaieteur Sports – Emanuel Archibald created history on Monday evening in El Salvador by becoming the first Guyanese athlete to secure a Gold Medal in the 100m event at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games.
While the CAC Games have been held since 1926, Guyana’s participation began in 1959, when the games were held in Venezuela.
Prior to Archibald’s momentous achievement, Guyana had only achieved first-place finishes in Track and Field at the CAC Games on three occasions.
The first gold medal in track and field was claimed by Ralph Gomes, representing British Guiana. In 1959, Gomes emerged victorious in the men’s 800m.
During the same year in Venezuela, he also secured a third-place finish in the 1500m event.
During the 1982 CAC Games in Cuba, June Griffith (mother of former NBA player Darren Collison) secured Guyana’s second gold medal by winning the women’s 400m event.
In the subsequent games held in the Dominican Republic in 1986, Oslen Barr triumphed in the Men’s 800m, adding another gold medal to Guyana’s track and field accolades.
The most recent track and field medals for Guyana in the CAC Games were earned during the 2010 edition in Puerto Rico.
Cleveland Forde claimed third place in the Men’s 5000m, Marian Burnett secured bronze in the women’s 800m, and Aliann Pompey finished second in the women’s 400m.
Emanuel Archibald’s victory in the 100m event marks a historic milestone for Guyana at the CAC Games, further cementing the nation’s presence and success in track and field competitions.
