Dem Boys Seh…
Kaieteur News – If some people had dem way, de 4th of July, American Independence Day, would have been a holiday in Guyana. Dem would dump CARICOM Day which is celebrated on de first Monday in July, in favour of celebrating de 4th July as a holiday.
CARICOM was established on de 4th July 1973. But we can’t celebrate CARICOM Day on de 4th July. Dat would not be right. After all, de founders of CARICOM would not have wanted dem having their day on de same day as dem Americans Independence Day.
America nah gat no respect fuh people Independence. Dat is why Burnham choose de first Monday in July rather than de 4th July. So, we need another holiday on de 4th July.
Guyanese become so Americanized dat yuh does want to wonder whether Guyana is more American than Caribbean. After all, we watching American television pon cable. We listening to American music just as much as Caribbean music. And we following wah going on in America just as much as we local news.
We using de US dollar fuh trading purposes. We gat nuff American franchise stores in Guyana and more to come. We importing more from America than de Caribbean. De supermarket full of American foods.
We celebrating Halloween and deh gat nuff people can turn on dem television fuh watch de fireworks on 4th July. Nah be surprise if we start tricking and treating door to door and holding Thanksgiving Dinner.
We might soon have we own Disney Land in Guyana. Some people done start flying de Stars and Stripes pon dem cars. And people want to go to America more than de sunny Caribbean.
So give we Monday as holiday fuh CARICOM Day. And add in Tuesday as de 4th of July fuh celebrate de Americanization of Guyana.
Talk half. Leff half!
