…an average of 13 persons murdered monthly; domestic violence killings double
Kaieteur News – The number of persons murdered in Guyana during the first half of 2023 has increased by 36.6 percent, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) reported. On Friday, the GPF disclosed that a total of 82 murders occurred during the first half 2023. That number represents an average of at least 13 persons being murdered every month. Last year, 60 murders occurred during the first half of the year.
Additionally, the GPF said that there has been a tremendous increase in the domestic violence murders with 33 persons losing their lives this year as opposed to 13 last year representing a 153 per cent increase.
There has been a slight decline in the number of disorderly murders this year which stands at 32 when compared to 38 for the same period last year. Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told Kaieteur News in a previous interview that disorderly killings take place as a result of drunken brawls or fights.
Meanwhile, of the 82 murders that took place, two were execution style killings, six occurred during robberies and nine are unknown (unsolved).
