Kaieteur Sports – The Inaugural Guyana Tennis Association (GTA) Open Single’s tournament, falling under the ‘One Guyana’ flagship, commenced yesterday at the National Racquet Centre (NRC) on Woolford Avenue in Georgetown. The opening ceremony, which marked the beginning of the 2023 Tennis Open event, was a brief but ceremonious affair.
Leading the event were Christy Campbell, President of the GTA, and Steve Ninvalle, Director of Sports. They addressed the players, parents, and coaches in attendance, emphasizing the significance of the GTA Open Singles tournament.
This two-week long competition features various categories, catering to a wide range of skill levels and age groups. The tournament includes Men’s Open Singles, Women’s Open Singles, Men’s 35 Singles, and Men’s 45 Singles. Each category promises fierce competition as participants vie for their respective titles. The matches will follow a best-of-three sets format, consistent across all categories.
During her opening speech, GTA President Campbell expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCY&S), as well as the National Sports Commission (NSC), for their support in bringing this prestigious tournament to fruition. She also expressed her delight at being given the opportunity to commence this inaugural tennis championship which is dubbed to have the largest cash prize in history of the sport locally. The competition offers an impressive two million in cash and prizes.
According to Campbell, matches will take place every day from Monday to Friday between the hours of 15:30 to 18:30. While on weekends, matches will begin at 14:00 hours and conclude at 18:30 hours, ensuring an exciting schedule for both players and spectators.
With the opening ceremony concluded, the Inaugural GTA Open Singles tournament has officially begun. Players and fans alike are eagerly anticipating the intense matches and the crowning of the deserving champions in each category.
