Kaieteur News – Seven persons are now homeless following a fire which destroyed a three-storey apartment building that also housed a supermarket at 360 Section B Non-Pariel, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
The fire occurred at about 18:32h on Thursday. Reports are that a gas bottle leak lead to the fire.
The victims have been identified as, 49-year-old Maxine Murray and 32-year-old Graymond Douglas who occupied the eastern side on the top floor of the building, Aliza Cummings and her daughter who lived in another apartment on the western side of the top floor, and a family of three: 39-year-old Renuka Muka, her husband 35-year-old Kelvin Reddy, and their 12-year-old child.
According to the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), “The fire was a result of flammable vapors released from a Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder that came into contact with open flames from a lit gas stove”
The flames then ignited nearby combustible materials and spread throughout the second and first floors of the building, respectively.
Two water tenders and a water carrier from the Melanie, Campbellville, and Alberttown fire stations, were sent to the scene after the fire department received a call that building was on fire.
“The first appliance [fire truck] arrived on scene at 18:37 p.m. and firefighting operations began at approximately 18:39 pm,” the fire service stated.
Despite efforts by fire firefighters, the top floor and second floor of the building and its contents were severely destroyed, while the ground floor suffered water damage.
Meanwhile, as the GFS continues its investigation, the firefighting agency “is again urging citizens to be cautious and put measures in place to avoid the devastation caused by fires”.
“Cooking should not be left unattended, and children should be kept away from the kitchen or cooking area,” GFS advised
The GFS also noted that children should be educated on the seriousness of fires and what to do in the event of fire-related emergencies. It also warned that if you are consuming alcohol, smoking, or using drugs of any kind, avoid using stoves and ovens.
