Kaieteur News – A senior police officer charged in 2021 for allegedly falsifying $1M in meal payments is once again before the court facing another fraud charge.
The cop identified as Assistant Superintendent of Police, Kurt Smith is now being accused of forging a Permanent Secretary’s (PS) signature on contract documents totaling some $9.7M and was charged for the new offence on Wednesday.
Smith was charged with six counts of misconduct in a public office following an investigation by the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU).
He made his court appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Delon Bess and the indictable charges read to him. He was not required to enter a plea.
Magistrate Bess granted the accused $100,000 for each count of misconduct and the matter was adjourned.
According to police, Smith has since been interdicted. Based on the SOCU investigation, from December 2021 to February 2022, six contracts totaling $9.7M were awarded to contractors for repairs on police buildings.
The contracts were supposed to be verified and sent to the PS at the Ministry of Home Affairs for her to sign off on them.
However, it is being alleged that this never happened. Smith allegedly signed on the contracts for the PS.
Investigators had contacted the PS, Mae Thomas to find out if she had authorized him to do so. She reportedly responded to the investigators by claiming that she never delegated her responsibility Smith, who was at the time assigned to the post of Finance Officer of the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
