Kaieteur News – A pregnant woman – Lorlyne Jeffreys has reportedly denied owning some $3M worth of marijuana found on her premises at Tabatinga, Lethem, Region Nine.
The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) had stated on Sunday that its ranks found nine plastic-wrapped parcels of suspected cannabis on her property. She was arrested and the drugs tested positive for marijuana. Jefferys’ however, has reportedly denied owning the drugs and claimed that she had no knowledge of how they got on her premises. The woman’s lawyer, Jerome Khan in a letter published by Stabroek News wrote: “Ms. Jeffrey denied any knowledge of the narcotics.”
Meanwhile, the lawyer went on to accuse the CANU ranks of mistreating his client during her detention and interrogation. “Ms. Jeffrey who is six months pregnant was placed in custody and kept more than 72 hours in detention and despite her painful condition; she was subjected to rigorous interrogation by CANU ranks headed by one Quinsi Holder.”, Khan claimed.
CANU has issued a statement refuting the lawyer’s claim that it has mistreated the pregnant woman. The agency confirmed that the suspect made investigators aware of her condition and as a result ranks did their best to ensure that she was comfortable during their investigation. “Ms. Lorlyne Jeffreys indicated that she was pregnant and as a result, a decision was made that Ms. Jeffreys would not be placed in the locks ups but rather be kept in the Enquiries Office pending investigation. It must be noted that at no time was Ms. Jeffreys handcuffed or placed in any lockups, whilst she was in custody”, CANU stated. The law-enforcement agency pointed out too that Jefferys was never kept in custody for more than 72 hours and was released on her own recognizance.
