…National Hockey team in must-win game at CAC Games
By Rawle Toney
Kaieteur Sports – In their pursuit of advancing to the next round at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games Hockey championship, Guyana is set to face the Dominican Republic today starting at 10:00 am.
Guyana commenced their campaign in Santo Domingo with a 1-4 loss to Trinidad and Tobago, while the Dominican Republic experienced a similar defeat against Cuba.
In an exclusive interview with Kaieteur News, Coach Robert Fernandes acknowledged the challenging task ahead for the Guyanese team, given their composition of young and seasoned players.
He mentioned, “The Dominican Republic performed admirably against Cuba. They are a much stronger team compared to the one we defeated in the previous CAC games. Nevertheless, I believe our players will perform well once we make the necessary adjustments.”
During the 2018 CAC Games in Barranquilla, Colombia, Guyana triumphed over the Dominican Republic 3-1, showcasing an exceptional performance that led them to the semi-finals.
In the semis, they narrowly lost 0-1 to the eventual champions, Cuba.
When asked about Guyana’s opening match against regional rivals Trinidad and Tobago, Fernandes commented that the key difference between the two teams was experience.
He stated, “Experience was evident as they exhibited greater composure and execution in crucial moments of the game. Trinidad and Tobago displayed clinical precision, capitalizing on any lapses in our mental focus.”
In the 2018 edition of the CAC Games Hockey event, Guyana secured a fourth-place finish, marking their second appearance after their debut in 1993 when they placed fifth.
Currently, Guyana sits at the bottom of Group B, having conceded the same number of goals as the Dominican Republic in the tournament.
Following today’s match, Guyana’s final group-stage game will be against Cuba on Sunday at 4:00 pm.
