Kaieteur Sports – Guyana’s highest ranked male table tennis players Shemar Britton had an outstanding outing at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in San Salvador. Despite falling short in the quarter-finals, Britton left an indelible mark on the tournament as he delivered sensational victories through to the quarter finals before his run ended.
From the onset of the tournament, it was evident that Britton had set his sight on greatness. His relentless work ethic, combined with unwavering dedication to the craft, had brought him to the cusp of sporting glory.
Throughout the tournament, Britton displayed unwavering focus, determination, and a mastery of the sport that left his opponents astounded throughout the tournament in the Men’s Singles event. Britton continues his good form with a victory over Oliver Guerrier of Haiti 4-0 to advance to the round of 16 in the Men’s single’s event, whilst both his country man and woman Jonathan Van Lange and Chelsea Edghill, respectively, came up short in their round 32 encounters. His input in the Men’s Double’s and Single’s teams afforded Guyana to advance to the quarter finals stages in four events they were one game short of a medal finish.
Britton has played well throughout the round stages in the event, and delivered an even better performance in the round of 16 encounter against Tejada Abit out of Dominica Republic; having lost the first match 8-11. Britton then stormed back to win four straight games to secure his spot in the quarter finals. As Guyana’s Men’s Singles, Men’s Teams, Women’s Doubles and Men’s Doubles all qualified for the quarterfinals.
The stage was set for the much anticipated quarter final matchup between Britton and the formidable Livan Martinez out of Cuba. In a repeat match of the 2019 Caribbean Championship U21 finals, this time in the quarterfinals of the CAC 2023. Though the final outcome was the same, Shemar Britton showed clearly how much his table tennis has grown and is consistency together with his current form was put to the test. He managed to bounce back to win the 3rd game after being down 0-2. He fought back to 2-3. Martinez, however, maximized his early momentum by closing out 2-4 to secure a commanding victory as Britton narrowly missed out on progressing into the semi finals.
