Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Office Assistants Promotion Committee (GOAPC) and the Ministry of Education recently organized an impressive event known as the ‘Fifth and Sixth Former’s Farewell Cricket Tournament.’ This grand occasion marked the largest ever secondary school boys’ Tapeball cricket competition. Held at Durban Park’s Tarmac on June 24th, the event brought together teams from various schools across Guyana, including the West Bank of Demerara, East Coast of Demerara, West Count Berbice, East Bank Demerara, and Georgetown.
After an exhilarating day of cricket, the tournament reached its climax with Diamond Secondary School facing off against Zeeburg Secondary School. Opting to bat first, Diamond Secondary set an imposing target, posting an impressive score of 104-1 from their allotted five overs. Led by Captain Deonarine Dindial’s outstanding performance, including a scintillating half-century with 8 sixes and 4 fours. Ronaldo Singh provided valuable support, contributing 16 runs.
In response, Zeeburg Secondary School could only manage 56-4 in their five overs, with U. Seetaran being the top scorer with 26 runs. Unfortunately for Zeeburg, their efforts fell short, and Diamond Secondary emerged victorious with a commanding 49-run win.
Meanwhile, in the earlier rounds of the tournament, St. Rose’s High defeated Bishop’s High, while Diamond edged past Patentia Secondary to secure the first spot in the quarter-finals. West Demerara Secondary then delivered an impressive performance by thrashing West Minster Secondary, earning them a spot in the semi-finals against Zeeburg. Zeeburg, in turn, triumphed over Marian Academy to move into the semi-finals. Diamond then defeated St. Rose’s High, while Zeeburg overcame West Demerara Secondary, setting the stage for the thrilling final encounter between Diamond and Zeeburg.
Upon the conclusion of the tournament, trophies, medals, and cash incentives were awarded to recognize outstanding performances. Prizes were given for achievements such as the first bowler to take 2-wickets in-one-over, the batsman to hit 3 sixes in-one-over, the best catch, and the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the finals.
