Kaieteur Sports – Two schools have so far qualified for the next stages of the ongoing National School Basketball Festival (NSBF). The tournament, which is organized by the by Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG), is in its 17th edition and is sponsored by ExxonMobil.
The winners in Region 6, East Berbice Corentyne, (New Amsterdam/ Canje) and the Region 10 competition in Linden, school basketball competition have been decided.
The Berbice final saw top teams New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary School (NAMS) and Berbice High School (BHS matching skills t the New Amsterdam Basketball Court.
The students from NAMS took command early and won easily against their BHS counterparts with a commanding 41-26 points win to take that title. Leading the charge for NAMS was Xavier Ferreira with 13 points. That performance also won him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. He got support from Jared Dant and Timothy Rampersaud with 11 points each. .
Over in Region 10 it was Kwakwani Secondary from the Berbice River that won that segment of the competition with an easy victory over Christiansburg Wismar Multilateral Secondary by a wide margin of 110-62.
Leading the scoring for Kwakwani Secondary was Kelon Phillips, who bucketed 37 points, he was supported by Kasim English with 23 points.
Leading the board for Christiansburg Wismar Multilateral was Teishawn Kitts with 32 points.
The NSBF is one of the biggest school basketball tournaments in the country, bringing together young and talented student-athletes from different regions to compete at a national level.
In addition to sponsoring the NSBF, ExxonMobil is also supporting the Student-Athlete Pathway Conference and the Regional School Basketball Conference for the second year in a row.
The tournament this year has seen over 70 schools playing in Regions 3, 4, 5, 6, & 10.
The finals are expected to be played later this month with the respective champions clashing in Georgetown. (Samuel Whyte)
