Dear Editor,
The Guyana Peace Council (GPC) joins with organizations across the world in observance of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The Day is observed on June 26 by the United Nations to draw attention to the global drug problem. It also serves as a reminder that everyone can play a role in tackling the issue. The Day is also about raising awareness about the dangers of drugs and illicit trafficking.
The history of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking dates back to 1987 when it was first established by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly. The resolution recognized the dangers posed by drugs and called for greater international cooperation in dealing with the issue. The theme of this year’s observance is People First: stop stigma and discrimination, strengthen prevention.”
The importance of this Day of Observance cannot be overemphasized. In addition to promoting public awareness, it is also used as an opportunity for governments to implement national initiatives to reduce substance abuse and fighting the illicit drug trade.
In this regard, the Guyana Peace Council wishes to take this opportunity to commend the current administration for the several measures it is taking to curb the use of substance abuse and the illicit trafficking of drugs. Among the several initiatives taken are the preparation of a National Action Plan for Drug Reduction, Preventative Education, Awareness Generation and Counseling as well as Treatment and Rehabilitation Services.
Regards,
Guyana Peace Council
