Kaieteur Sports – There were plenty action on the volleyball court in Berbice when the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) successfully held a goodwill volleyball competition for teams in Berbice and Demerara.
The one day competition, which was played at the Guysuco Port Mourant Training Centre, was played in three categories namely Males, females and males U19. In total, 12 teams participated with Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC) winning all three categories.
The senior male category saw six teams in contention, namely Castrol strikers, PMTC, Berbice U19, Orealla Falcons, Rollers with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Castrol Strikers travelling from Demerara.
The teams were placed into two groups with the top two teams emerging to contest the semifinals. In the end it was PMTC and Castrol Strikers that emerged as the finalist. Host PMTC made light work of the visitors winning 2-0 in a straight set blow out 21- 12, 21- 16.
There were three teams in the female category with Hopetown Ninjas, Port Mourant Females and Orealla Falcons being the contestants. Port Mourant females were victorious after defeating Orealla Falcons 25-18, 25-12 in a best of three finals. This was after round Robin contest with the three teams.
The winners and outstanding players displays their trophies, medals and other accolades as officials also join in.
The Academy competition for U19 teams had three teams participating with Guysuco Training Centre, NO 47 Challengers and Orealla Falcons taking to the court.
In the final, GTCPM defeated No. 47 Challengers 25- 11, 25- 23 for a 2-0 victory after the teams were first involved in a rounded Robin play off.
First and second place trophies were presented in each category, with first and second place medals also being presented in the senior male category.
The top individual performers were also rewarded with Daniel Joseph receiving the MVP in the senior male category. The MVP trophy for the top female was presented to Amesha Manisha Mohabir, while Orandi Welcome copped the MVP trophy in the U19 category.
The BVA thanked the GDF and Castrol Strikers for participating, while appreciation was also shown to Trophy Stall among others for their contributions. (Samuel Whyte)
